The Canadian Dental Care Program (CDCP) is a vital government initiative aimed at making dental care more accessible and affordable for Canadians facing financial challenges. It supports low- and middle-income individuals and families without private dental insurance by covering essential services such as preventive care, restorative treatments, and emergency procedures.
The program ensures that cost is not a barrier to necessary dental treatment, helping Canadians maintain good oral health and avoid delays in care. At Renew Dental Family Dentistry, we are proud to support the CDCP and help our patients navigate its benefits. Below, we explain everything you need to know about the Canadian Dental Care Program, eligibility, what’s covered, how to apply, and key updates for 2025.
The Canadian Dental Care Program is available to people and families with low- to moderate incomes who do not have proper dental insurance coverage. Eligibility criteria are based on family income and household size, and the program primarily serves:
The CDCP covers a range of essential dental services to ensure that individuals and families can maintain good oral health. Services include:
Preventive Care: Routine check-ups, cleanings, fluoride treatments, and dental X-rays that help detect issues early and prevent costly procedures down the line.
Basic Restorative Services: Fillings, root canals, and other treatments that restore the functionality and structure of teeth damaged by decay or injury.
Emergency Dental Care: Treatment for acute dental pain, infections, or injuries that require immediate attention.
Extractions: Remove teeth that are beyond repair due to decay or damage.
Applying for the CDCP is simple and can be done through the official government website. The application process typically involves providing information about your income, family size, and whether you have any existing dental insurance coverage. Once you are approved, you will be issued a dental care card or certificate.
We can assist you with the application process, including gathering the required documents and submitting them on your behalf. We’re here to ensure that you get the dental care you need without unnecessary delays.
The Canadian government has announced several key improvements to the Public Service Dental Care Plan (PSDCP), effective January 1, 2025. These changes aim to improve the accessibility and scope of the program, benefiting more Canadians. Key updates include:
Increased Annual Maximums: Starting January 1, 2025, the annual reimbursement limit for dental care will increase from $2,500 to $3,000. This limit will further rise to $3,250 annually starting January 1, 2027.
Lifetime Orthodontics Maximum: Beginning January 1, 2025, the lifetime reimbursement cap for orthodontic treatments will increase from $2,500 to $3,000. By January 1, 2027, this cap will further increase to $3,250.
Major Restorative Services Coverage: Eligible expenses for major restorative treatments, including crowns, inlays, onlays, dentures, and bridges, will now be covered at 65%, up from the previous rate of 50%.
Preventative Services: The removal of age restrictions will make routine services, such as pit and fissure sealants, accessible to individuals of all ages.
Leave Without Pay: Members on approved unpaid leave who need to pay the employer’s share to retain their dental coverage can now defer these payments and settle them upon returning to work. Additionally, individuals on caregiving or parental leave will no longer be required to contribute to maintain their coverage during the leave period.
